Will VoIP Work with Mobile Broadband?

Did you know that over half of the UK’s staff worked from home during 2020? VoIP has been a lifeline for many of these employees, allowing them to continue taking work calls remotely. However, to do so, they also need a strong internet connection.

The question for many organisations is whether mobile broadband will suffice, as this post will explore.

VoIP and mobile broadband

VoIP works through a broadband connection, rather than dial-up or a traditional landline. This is beneficial for a number of reasons. Unlike the old days of dial-up, you can use both the internet and phone at the same time, which is vital for everyday business functions in a modern world. VoIP is also more cost-effective, flexible, and accessible, as there’s minimal hardware required.

The one thing that businesses do need, however, is a good internet connection. Without it, your VoIP calls might suffer from voice lags and video disruption, as well as disconnected calls and out-of-sync audio. Unfortunately, mobile broadband won’t provide you with the steady stream of data that you need in order to make the most of your VoIP.

That said, your broadband doesn’t need to be the most cutting-edge. It just needs to be stable, providing your employees with the speed and bandwidth that they need to get on with their day. Fibre broadband is ideal, but as long as you have a cable broadband connection with at least 256 kbps available for both uploading and downloading, you shouldn’t experience any issues.
