SIM Only Vs Contract: What’s Best for My Organisation?

SIM-only vs contract is the main distinction when it comes to phones for charities and businesses. So, how do you decide between the two? In this post, we’ll provide a quick rundown of how both work and their benefits to help you make the right choice.

Contract phones

Contract phones are the traditional choice when it comes to paying for your phone on a monthly basis. You get a device to use, plus the calls, texts and mobile data you need to use it. The cost of the device is broken down and spread across your monthly payments, alongside the cost of usage, with contracts typically ranging from 12 months up to 48 months.

SIM-only

On the other hand, SIM-only deals take the device out of the equation. That reduces the contract’s ongoing cost and allows providers to offer shorter contracts – with no need to increase contract length to spread the cost of a handset. You’re free to use whichever device you choose or change the device if required.

Which is best for my organisation?

In terms of the general public, the SIM-only vs contract debate is almost split down the middle. SIM-only deals account for 46% of phone contracts compared to 52% for handset deals (with 2% of respondents unsure).

For businesses and charities, it comes down to what works best for you. If you like the convenience of having handsets included and paid for over time, a contract phone is the best option for you.

Alternatively, if you already have devices to use – or would rather purchase them yourself upfront – then a SIM-only deal is the better option. It will cost less and typically involves less commitment than a contract with a handset included.
